Good and Bad Botrytis Viognier

I decided to continue my dessert wine kick by trying a bottle of Botrytis Viognier from Yalumba.  I found the 2009 FSW 8B enjoyable for short-term drinking.  During a recent trip to Wide World of Wines I saw a bottle of 2004 Hand-Picked Botrytis Viognier.  Curious about the longevityof this type of wine I grabbed a bottle.  It turns out the 2004 vintage was the first release of Botrytis Viognier by Yalumba.  Had I noticed the Recommended Cellaring date of 2014 for the 2009 vintage and 2008 of the 2004 vintage, I might not have purchased it.  I cannot write as to what it originally was like but it is now far past its prime.  The 2004 should be dumped instead of sold.  The 2009 Yalumba was purchased from MacArthur Beverages.  The 2004 was purchased from Wide World of Wines.

2009 Yalumba, FSW 8B, Botrytis Viognier, Wrattonbully – $20 (375mL)
Imported by Negocients USA.  This wine is 100% Viognier.  RS 129 g/L, Alcohol 11.0%.  The color is a light to medium gold.  The light nose is of apricot and peach.  In the mouth there are weighty, rich, racy flavors of dried apricot and spiced fruit.  The is good acidity, more spices, and flavors of black tea.  It is a very solid wine which leaves perfumed residual sugar on the lips.  *** Now-2018.

2004 Yalumba, Hand Picked , Botrytis Viognier, Wrattonbully – $22 (375mL)
Imported by Negocients USA.  This wine is 100% Viognier.  RS 94 g/L, Alcohol 11.0%.  The color is alight amber-orange and looks too old for its age.  The nose is tired with cola and burnt caramel aromas.  In the mouth the flavors are similar, past prime, vegetal, sweet with minimal acidity, and flavors of wood and old apples. Dump.  Poor Past.
