A pair of holiday Chateauneuf du Pape

CdP1

My plan to drink bottle after bottle of mature wine did not occur over the long holiday.  Between cooking, cleaning, flying around, and general laziness I found I was often too tired to open something nice in the evening.  As such the 1998 Bosquet des Papes, Chateauneuf du Pape was a good match for my energy level.  I had hoped for a better showing from this wine but in reviewing my notes I should not be surprised for I have repeatedly suggested it should be drunk up.  The 2000 Domaine du Galet des Papes, Vieilles Vignes, Chateauneuf du Pape turned out to be a good surprise.  I found it on the shelf along with the regular 2012 vintage so I imagine it is some kind of library release.  It balanced price with freshness, acidity, and a modest amount of complexity from age.  The Bosquet came from Wide World of Wines some years ago. The Galet was recently purchased from La Casa Sena wine shop in Santa Fe.

1998 Bosquet des Papes, Chateauneuf du Pape
Imported by Ginday Imports.  This wine is a blend of 75% Grenache, 11% Syrah, 11% Mourvedre and 3% Cinsault.  Alcohol 13.5%.  The roast earth aromas on the nose suggest this wine is marching past peak drinking.  In the mouth the savory red fruit, integrated watering acidity, and tannic structure at the end show that this wine is very much alive.  There are mature notes of old polished wood, leather, and an interesting core of flavor.  Despite the presence of some cherry fruit in the finish, the structural components out pace the flavor.  ** Now.

2000 Domaine du Galet des Papes, Vieilles Vignes, Chateauneuf du Pape
This wine is a blend of 60% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre and 10% Syrah sourced from 80-100-years old vines. Alcohol 14%.  The maturing flavors are delivered with a fresh nature suggesting a recent library release.  The wine slowly unfurled over a few hours offering darker fruit, some earth and garrigue, and hints of roast earth.  There was lively acidity and integrated structure.  *** Now.
