The historic road atlas of France known as the Atlas de Trudaine was made between 1745 and 1780.  The creation of the atlas was ordered by Charles Daniel Trudaines, Director of Roads and Bridges.  This atlas details existing roads, those soon to be created at the time, and many bridge profiles.  Such breadth required some 62 volumes with over 3,000 watercolor images.  While that size is staggering, what brought the maps to my attention is that they detail the land surrounding the roads.  In certain areas this reveals not only rivers, forests, and fields but vineyards.  For this post I have picked two images, one centered on Bordeaux and the other on Barsac and Preignac.  I find these images are fantastic for their use of color, precision, and depiction of land use!
