Two Excellent and Affordable Cotes du Rhones from 2009

The parade of excellent Rhone wines continues with these two selections.  We have already drunk several bottles of the Piaugier and have been consistently pleased by the depth to this wine.  Actually, I was shocked upon tasting my first glass of this wine.  You may drink it now, after giving it air, or cellar it.  The Andre Brunel is excellent as well, showing more structure right now so I would definitely cellar it.  These are two reasons why the wines of the Rhone are drunk so frequently in my house.

The Piaugier is imported by DS Trading Company and available for $12 at MacArthurs.  The Andre Brunel is imported by Robert Kacher Selections and available for $13 at MacArthurs.  But them both by the case.

2009 Domaine de Piaugier, La Grange de Piaugier, Cotes du Rhone
This wine is a blend of Grenache, Carignan, Cinsault, and Syrah sourced from 45-year-old vines.  The wine was aged in tank. There is a light nose of almost rich aromas. There are darker red fruits with a bit of texture, and an incense-like quality.  Toward the midpalate it becomes lifted with expansive flavors in the finish, leaving an inky, coiled aftertaste.  The underlying acidity is supportive.  With air dark fruit, stone, and sweet spice notes appear after the midpalate.  This is drinkable now but will develop over the short-term. *** Now-2017.

2009 Domaine Andre Brunel, Cuvee Sabrine, Cotes du Rhone Villages
This wine is a blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvedre.  There is a light nose.  In the mouth, there are first hard blue fruits that dance on the very tip of the tongue.  The flavors then become redder with Kirsch and herbs.  There is youthful structure and acidity.  The ample, drying tannins coat the lips leaving a lovely stone-flavored aftertaste.  I would cellar this for several years. *** 2015-2020.
