2009 Buty Winery, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, Columbia Valley

This is the first time I have had a wine from Buty Winery.  They were founded in 2000 by Nina Buty Foster and Caleb Foster. This wine is a blend of 64% Merlot and 36% Cabernet Franc. 90% of the grapes were sourced from the Conner Lee Vineyard with 10% from Champoux Vineyard. The Conner Lee vines are 18 years old whereas the Cabernet Franc vines from Champoux are 12 years old. It as aged in 60% new Bordeaux Chateaux barrels.

I bought this bottle at Soul Wine in Seattle for roughly $35.  If you buy this wine then I highly recommend you cellar it.  If you are looking for something to drink in the short-term then I would buy something else.  This is tight and not giving up much, even after several hours of air.

This wine is slow to unveil and even then is still tightly wound.  There are layers of hard, stone fruits mixed with some new wood flavors.  Then there is an almost spicy heat as blue fruits and spices come out.  I would cellar this for several years before trying again.
