2008 Mas Conscience, “Le Cas”, Vin de Pays de l’Herault

Mas Conscience is a biodynamic winery run by Genevieve and Laurent Vidal.  This wine is 100% Carignan from 50-year-old vines grown at 250 meters.  The vineyards are full of quartz and located in the Terrases de Larzac.  While this AOC was only created in 2005 it was first planted with vines by the Romans.  Both Jancis Robinson and Andrew Jefford have praised this AOC.

This wine was fine but nothing thrilling.  Nor was I thrilled with the 2008 selections of Domaine du Pas de l’Escalette which are also from the same AOC.  I was thrilled by their 2009.  It is possible this bottle was underperforming but I suspect it is best to wait for the 2009.

The color in the glass is light to medium ruby with garnet hints.  It has a light to medium nose of delicate fruits and pepper hints.  In the mouth this lean wine shows brighter red fruit, fine, puckering tannins followed by a more filling aftertaste supported by respectable acidity.  This was a bit more fleshed out on the second day.  ** 2014-2017.
